Jenny Orr, Resident in Counseling

- currently accepting new clients -

Hi! I’m Jenny Orr, M.S., M.A., a Resident in Counseling here at The Calmed. I believe in the importance of building a meaningful connection with clients, and I prioritize empathy and support in those client-therapist relationships. I am passionate about helping people navigate perinatal concerns such as infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, birth trauma, and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. I also have experience with grief and loss, anxiety, and depression, and I am committed to providing affirming care to the LGBTQIA+ population.

I draw on my lived experience as well as my education and trainings in my work with clients. I worked in academia for over a decade before following my passion and obtaining my Master of Science degree in Counselor Education (with a focus on Clinical Mental Health Counseling) at Radford University in 2024. I grew up in Germany and immigrated to the US in my twenties; I enjoy working with people from all countries and value their unique culture and customs.

I use a variety of interventions and evidence-based practices, depending on my clients’ needs. I approach clinical work mainly from a person-centered and feminist background, and draw on somatic methods, Gestalt therapy, logotherapy, cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy, narrative practices, and motivational interviewing in my practice.

I have completed advanced trainings with Postpartum Support International and will obtain my Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) this fall. I have also been admitted into the RETAIN Parental Leave Coaching Certification Program for Fall ’24, which will enable me to guide parents (to-be) through the parental leave process.

Motivational Interviewing methods help Aaron inspire a sense of confidence in the people he serves.

Through his experience in life and in work, Aaron has become adept in assisting those experiencing mental health crises, depression, grief, racial/sexual/gender identity related trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and substance abuse. Aaron strives to make your time together a respite, a space that allows you to feel celebrated rather than judged.

She is trauma-informed, identity inclusive, and forever motivated to learn new tools for best meeting the needs of her clients.
Maria has expanded her practice to include EMDR as an EMDRIA basic trained practitioner & will be integrating more Somatics & trauma-informed yoga practice into her work at Calmed Counseling. Maria maintains a waitlist; she is currently scheduling into 2025. She’s also a poet & new dog mom!

Courtney Brooks, Resident in Counseling

Courtney is a Resident in Counseling who is passionate about utilizing both her lived experience and her native roots to Southwest VA to support members of her community through her therapy. She completed her M.Ed. in Counseling from Virginia Tech, as well as holding a Bachelors Degree in Religion from Emory & Henry College. Courtney utilizes a mix of experiential techniques, along with person–centered, Gestalt, emotion-focused and relational lenses such as Attachment Theory to guide her sessions and treatment. Courtney likes to look at her clients in a very holistic manner and believes that all aspects of our life (mental, physical, emotional, economical, familial, sexual, etc.) impact the things that we may want to work on, change, or process in a therapeutic space. Courtney has experience with children age 13+ and working with their families, as well as both undergraduate and graduate students, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and couples. Courtney has also worked with individuals and couples who are experiencing religious trauma and religious deconstruction, as well as sexually positive counseling services for health, wellness, and psychoeducation. Courtney is continuously curious and eager to learn how to better serve her clients, and believes that therapy should be collaborative between the therapist and client so that you receive the best services to fit your individualized needs.

Virtual Assistant

Ellie Schultz, Virtual Assistant

Ellie first joined us as an intern for her final semester at VT where she recently graduated with dual degrees in Psychology & Human Development. She is currently enrolled in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Boston College with plans of becoming an LPC. We're very fortunate to have Ellie sticking with us to provide virtual support to our counselors & clients. Her role is continually developing (because she's great at everything we've given her!).. you'll currently find Ellie managing our website, all sorts of behind the scenes details, and, perhaps most importantly, she is helping us increase follow-up time with new client inquiries. We know seeking counseling can be a vulnerable moment & it's hard to wait to hear back after you've reached out. Ellie is working closely with our clinical team to identify good options for interested clients (both within our practice & in the broader community) to ensure our responses are timely & helpful.
